Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood Watch is a community based program sanctioned by the Sunriver Police Department to bring the residents of Sunriver closer together in an effort to frustrate criminal activity in our community. Many of the crimes that take place in Sunriver would not take place if citizens took a few basic precautions.

The underlying philosophy is that our citizens can prevent many crimes and assist in more criminals being apprehended if they take the time to report suspicious persons, record serial numbers of valuable property and write down license numbers of cars and trucks cruising suspiciously around their neighborhoods.

There are currently several hundred participants in the Sunriver Neighborhood Watch Program. The goal has been to recruit one Block Captain for every lane in Sunriver. This task has been substantially completed. The program is coordinated by Richard Tyler who has appointed four District Coordinators to work under him. The District Coordinators are responsible for the recruitment of Block Captains in their Districts.

If you are interested in joining the Neighborhood Watch Program please call the Sunriver Police Department for more details. Please Call 593-1014.

Citizen Academy

The basic concept of the Citizen Academy is to give citizens an abbreviated version of the Police Academy. They receive training in Oregon Law, the complexity of our Judicial System, firearms safety, traffic stops, building searches, and DUll detection. There are field trips incorporated with training to the Deschutes County Jail, 911 Dispatch Center, and the Firearms Range.  Classes are taught by trainers from our department, other local law enforcement agencies, the Deschutes County District Attorneys Office, and Deschutes County 911. The classes range from classroom lectures to simulated field training. The group will meet an average of two evenings a week for eight weeks to become better versed in the duties of law enforcement officers.

The primary goal of this program is to educate residents about the roles and responsibilities of law enforcement Officers. Our hope is that through this education we will develop increased support for our department and our community as a whole. The past Citizen Academy classes have proven to be a positive experience for both the participants and the instructors alike.
